It’s very interesting to read a collection of short stories that are actually all connected。 With most of the ito books I’ve read in the past some stories do cross over or they might have a story like Tomie where it’s connected but this book is nice， short and sweet。

Junji Ito has this insane ability to show something earth-shatteringly horrible in each and every one of his books。 Something that bites into the soul and really sucks the life out of it。 The main attraction of most of his work is the event itself， not the characters or emotional plot。 If anything， his characters are merely catalysts for the disturbing elements。 That also means that there is rarely a satisfying conclusion， but if there's anything that breaks the surrealist elements of his work， Junji Ito has this insane ability to show something earth-shatteringly horrible in each and every one of his books。 Something that bites into the soul and really sucks the life out of it。 The main attraction of most of his work is the event itself， not the characters or emotional plot。 If anything， his characters are merely catalysts for the disturbing elements。 That also means that there is rarely a satisfying conclusion， but if there's anything that breaks the surrealist elements of his work， it's the concept of the unsatisfying ending。 Real life in itself is rarely a satisfying endeavor that concludes itself in a clean way。Where does Junji Ito's Dissolving Classroom fit into all of this？ Well， most simply， I view it as an effective companion to Tomie。 Tomie was essentially a series of loosely connected short stories about a femme fatale that would regenerate herself， often after seducing men who would brutally kill her。 It was incredibly disturbing but it also had a formula or a "gimmick。" Every story played out somewhat similarly， but with enough difference to not be exhaustingly repetitive。 The characters were just fodder for Tomie， to the point where I'm convinced that Tomie， the technical villain of that story， was the main character。 Dissolving Classroom is quite similar in that: it focuses on a pair of siblings who have some kind of pact with the devil。 One of the siblings constantly apologizes to people， mysteriously resulting in people melting away。 Dissolving Classroom explores that for two hundred pages and then ends。 It's a short and sweet read， but certainly worth picking up。 That being said， there's not much going on here besides the villains apologizing/being weird and annoying and people dissolving。 Little light on substance compared to some of his other work， still not bad at all。 。。。more

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would。 The idea of a person who can kill with what is generally considered kind words （apologizing， compliments） is very interesting。 The devil aspect was also cool， although I wish it had been delved into more。

I actually think this is one of my favourite works from Junji Ito， weird and creepy and gory enough to make me a little uncomfortable。 I definitely prefer the stories which have multiple chapters like this， allows for a lot more exploration of the characters。 Definitely recommend！

Not exactly the top tier of Ito but a great little horror collection particularly in the idea of apologizing giving a demonic presence more power and the terrifying girl of Chizumi who is comfortably the most evil little sister in history being a great Ito character just as scary as any of his other iconic creatures。 A clever and comfortable critique on Japanese social neurosis through over apologizing and praise over aesthetics and over criticism on young women。 It's a bit of a middling Ito as Not exactly the top tier of Ito but a great little horror collection particularly in the idea of apologizing giving a demonic presence more power and the terrifying girl of Chizumi who is comfortably the most evil little sister in history being a great Ito character just as scary as any of his other iconic creatures。 A clever and comfortable critique on Japanese social neurosis through over apologizing and praise over aesthetics and over criticism on young women。 It's a bit of a middling Ito as far as his works go， the characters dissolving is as gross and gruesomely detailed as ever with Ito but the scope of the short stories is not as far reaching as other Ito works but if you had a short train journey or needed something to quickly pass the time then these would do nicely。 。。。more

I really enjoyed reading this and looking at the art。 On whole， I thought it was cute （not in the literal sense because obviously）。 In comparison to his other short story （that is long enough to be its own thing）， Remina， this had better flow in terms of storytelling， and the art is immaculate as always。 It's a good read if you're interested in small short stories that all follow the same lore and stuff—a quick good read。The way "chapters" work for Ito is that it's basically taking the same horr I really enjoyed reading this and looking at the art。 On whole， I thought it was cute （not in the literal sense because obviously）。 In comparison to his other short story （that is long enough to be its own thing）， Remina， this had better flow in terms of storytelling， and the art is immaculate as always。 It's a good read if you're interested in small short stories that all follow the same lore and stuff—a quick good read。The way "chapters" work for Ito is that it's basically taking the same horrifying being/situation and just placing it in a different scenario （akin to the Final Destination movies where they have no overt connection to one another other than plot formula）。 I've noticed that it can oftentimes seem to drag or make you question character choices （like if a bunch of bad things keeps happening， why do people just move on like it never happened）。 But， on the other hand， I felt like the things that happened her work more cohesively together and seemed realistic in terms of overall plot （well as realistic as Ito can get， lmao）。In terms of more spoiler-like notes。 I just want to say that the brother is the fakest person I've ever read （saw？）。 I mean， his sister is nuts， but at least she's not constantly lying about it， lol。 。。。more
